Some suppliers quote prices lower than the cost of producing virgin silica gel from raw materials. This is not a promotion or a volume discount. It is recycled silica gel — used desiccant packets that have been collected, dried, and repackaged as new.

Research from SERI/DOE tested nine silica gel samples from various batches and suppliers. Samples regenerated with electric heaters lost a maximum of 7% capacity. Samples processed in other ways lost between 20% and 47% — depending on the age and cycle of regeneration. The NREL found that silica gel exposed to ambient air during thermal cycling lost 5% to 30% of its capacity, with most of the loss occurring in the first month.
A 2023 study in the Chemical Engineering Journal tested silica gels through 5,000 temperature swing adsorption cycles. At a regeneration temperature of 250°C, 30 Å pore size silica lost 33% of its capacity, while 22 Å pore size silica lost 52%. Even at lower regeneration temperatures, capacity loss follows a clear temperature dependence — higher regeneration temperature means lower capacity after cycling.
What this means for buyers: A desiccant that looks correct in the packet may fail in the field. By the time the customer discovers the problem, the shipment has been accepted and the damage is done.
Broken & Off-Size Beads: Not the Same as Recycled
During manufacturing, some beads break or are off-size. These are broken & off-size beads / granular material. They are made from virgin raw material, retain full adsorption capacity, and are simply irregular in shape.
Some suppliers blend this material into bead products without telling the buyer. If the content is high and not declared, you are overpaying for what you think is a full-bead product.

Cobalt-Free Blue & Orange Silica Gel
Conventional blue silica gel uses cobalt chloride (CoCl₂) as the color indicator. CoCl₂ is classified as an SVHC under EU REACH and is restricted in food-contact applications in the EU, Japan, and many other markets.
Both blue and orange indicating silica gel can be manufactured cobalt-free. Cobalt-free blue silica gel uses an organic indicator to achieve the same blue-to-pink color change. Cobalt-free orange silica gel uses a non-toxic iron-salt indicator, transitioning from orange to green or colorless. Both are available for export markets with strict compliance requirements.
What You Should Do
Ask your supplier: “Is this virgin or recycled material?”
Request a CoA and compare adsorption values at RH 20%, 50%, and 90% against virgin specifications.
Ask about broken & off-size bead content if buying bead products.
Test a sample before placing a bulk order — especially moisture uptake and color-change tests.
Verify compliance for your destination market, particularly for cobalt-containing products.
